God is our Refuge
Where is your favorite spot to rest, reflect, and recharge? I asked this question a few months ago in a completely unscientific-but-fun-anyway survey. The majority of the responses included the outdoors. The beach received a little over one-third of the votes (to which I echo a hearty “Amen!”). A compilation of votes for ponds, creeks, and streams ran a close second to the beach. Mountain vistas tied with forest paths, while back porches and backyards also rated as popular choices.
Some responses included quiet places indoors—libraries, coffee shops, and even waiting rooms. Others were creative spots, like a sewing room and a woodshop. The most practical was a minivan.
Implied in the survey question, as well as in the responses I received, is the necessity for rest, reflection, and recharging. We all need a place of refuge. Our bodies and souls require times of rest to face the demands of life.
A place of refuge is a wonderful thing. But what happens when we can’t get there? Our peaceful day at the beach is set aside to care for a sick loved one. An unexpected appointment eats up the time we intended for a quiet walk in the forest. Our mountain retreat is cancelled because of snow–in June. Circumstances keep us in the thick of battle when we’re desperate for a respite.
Is this true for you today? Are you worn out with no break in sight? I have good news for you, my friend. You don’t have to slip away to your place of refuge. Your Refuge is waiting for you right where you are.
Psalm 46:1 declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” We don’t have to hang on until we escape to our favorite spot. We can run to God Himself and find refuge in Him. He is a very present help in the times we can’t continue. He tenderly shelters us under His wings like a mother hen gathers her chicks. (Psalm 91:4)
He cares for us when we are overwhelmed. Listen to Psalm 62:8: “Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” God invites you to share everything with Him—your burdens, joys, questions, dreams, fears. He will shield you as you rest in Him and strengthen you for whatever is ahead.
Run to your true Refuge. May you find peace in His presence.
Now it’s your turn! Where is your place of refuge? How has God been a refuge for you?

Enjoyed hearing the results of your survey. Beach is my number 1 choice, but all those other spots are great places to rest, too. Jesus reminded us of the importance of seeking a quiet place to rest. Perhaps it’s our intention to find peace and rest rather than the location we select. But that doesn’t mean I want to give up my walks on the beach!

Great post, Kim. I appreciated reading the locations where people find refuge. I’m so grateful my Refuge is ever-present – He shelters me, He indwells me, and He hems me in. All I have to do is pause and get still – and that helps me remember I am always in HIs presence.
