God Will Never Fail You
How many times have you opened your computer only to have the internet fail? How about waiting for the call from the doctor’s office they promised would come today but never does? Things fail. People, including ourselves, fail. But God will never fail you. He reminded me of that truth a few months ago. . .
“I’m not going to start your IV yet since we don’t know if we’ll be able to do surgery today.” The nurse smiled sympathetically at my husband. “The doctor should be in soon to talk with you.”
We’d arrived at six a.m. for an out-patient procedure on Barry’s left eye. But on that humid July morning, millions of computer systems crashed worldwide. A major IT outage triggered cancelled flights, delayed surgeries, and loss of revenue. The outage affected thousands globally.
When something we depend on lets us down, our lives are disrupted and inconvenienced. But amid the aggravation, we’re not totally taken by surprise because we know things break. However, when a friend we trust fails us, we’re hurt on a different level. Feelings of disappointment and disillusionment slither across our hearts. We wonder if there’s anyone we can completely depend on.
Thankfully, there is One who never fails. God is perfect and unchanging. Though circumstances might cause others to break their promises to us—and us to them—God is in control of all things. His words are pure and He will always do what He says.
In the Old Testament, God commissioned Joshua to lead the people of Israel into the land He had promised them. He proclaims to Joshua, “Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.” (Joshua 1:5)
When Joshua heard God’s words, did he think back over the last forty years? He’d seen God faithfully provide for the Israelites. God delivered them from bondage in Egypt. He guided them through the wilderness with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. When the people were hungry, He rained manna from heaven for them to eat. God provided water from a rock to quench their thirst. During the forty years of wandering in the desert, their clothes and sandals never wore out.
The nation of Israel numbered between two and three million people by this time. God didn’t fail them as a nation, and He didn’t fail them as individuals. Each person had enough to eat, drink, and wear.
God does not change. His character is always the same, and we can place our confidence in Him. Even when we fail Him, He won’t fail us.
Are you disappointed or discouraged today? Look to the unfailing One. Hold on to Deuteronomy 31:8: “The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
