God Knows Your Name

Do you ever get names confused? I do. I always remember faces, but names can be a different story.

Fortunately, I have yet to forget my own name. Maybe that’s because my teenage years spanned the late 1960’s to mid-70’s. One popular piece of jewelry during that era was the ‘I.D.’ bracelet. I still remember the one I received as a Christmas/birthday gift. Sterling silver, delicate links, my name written in flowing script across a silver band. I loved that bracelet but have no idea what happened to it. (If you ever come across a tarnished old relic engraved with the name ‘Kimberly,’ let me know.)

Of course, identification bracelets were popular both before and after my teenage years. When my sister and I went through my mom’s belongings after she passed away at 94, we found two special engraved bracelets. (photo above) Each silver bracelet had intricate flower links in the shape of forget-me-nots. During WWII, these bracelets were engraved with names of family members fighting overseas, along with names of family and friends left at home. I’m guessing the names on my mom’s bracelets were those of her classmates, friends, and “the boys,” as she called them, who fought overseas. The jewelry served as a beautiful way to remember by name those separated during war.

Did you realize God knows your name? And He doesn’t need a bracelet to remember you because He has engraved those who belong to Him on the palms of His hands. Listen to His words in the Old Testament book of Isaiah: “Can a woman forget her nursing child And have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands. . .” (Isaiah 49:15-16) What a beautiful picture of God’s love and care. We never have to worry about God forgetting us because He’s always thinking of us.

In the New Testament, Jesus tells us He is our Good Shepherd. In John 10:2-3, Jesus proclaims “He who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” What an amazing truth! The Savior of the world knows each of us by name.

Do you sometimes feel alone? Wonder if anyone really sees you or remembers you? Take heart, my friend. God knows you and loves you. You mean everything to Him. He’s always thinking of you and He will never forget about you.

He knows your name.

Now it’s your turn! I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please leave your comments in the box below.

I surely needed to hear this today. I see my doctor Monday as I have had a very bad cold since Dec. 12th and over-the-counter meds are not helping. I am praying that she will have an solution for me and God willing, I will get better very soon. I start each day as I make my bed saying “God is Great and Life is Good”. That helps me get started the right way and this afternoon, your message helps me feel event better! Thank you.

Great post, Kim. I’m very grateful God knows each of us, and loves us because that is who He is. I love the verse that explains He chose us, and another that confirms He planned all of our days before any of them began.

I loved the idea of the bracelet with names of our WWII military. My father was a veteran and I’m sure my mother would have wanted one of those to pray for him,her brother, and others in the war. If she had one, we didn’t find it. Thanks for sharing this encouraging message that our Lord knows our names–always.

I wish we had known about the bracelet sooner—I would have loved hearing more of the story of those names. Her college friends and classmates were always special to her. Thanks for sharing, Katherine! Blessings.

    Hi KB,
Thank you so much for sharing this. I have been feeling very alone since Tom died and needed to hear this. I remember those bracelets too. Mine said Mary Kimberly…my birth name and the name I went by all those years ago. I wore it at Meredith but it didn’t survive my sophomore year 😉 As always, your writing always touches a special place in my heart. Take care & God bless.
    Love,
    MK
