Light for My Path

Do you ever stumble around your house in the dark? I do this when my husband is asleep and I need to adjust the thermostat. Not really the greatest idea, because sometimes I press the A/C when I intend to turn on the heat. Makes for a chilly start the next morning. Outside, though, I always have light for my path, especially since I attended a class on wildlife in our community.

Deer, snakes, and possums occasionally trek through our yard. Sightings of a bear or fox have also circulated through the neighborhood. But I was surprised to learn bobcats and coyotes live in our area. If I’m late taking out the trash, trust me, I will have a light for my path. Two lights, actually.

Our trashcan sits behind the detached garage toward the back of our property. I’d hate to startle a snake or possum on my way across the yard. A flashlight is handy for lighting my next step. But my little flashlight can’t reach far enough ahead to illuminate the corners of the yard. Fortunately, a floodlight on the side of the garage is bright enough to shine across any visitors with sharp teeth.

Did you know God’s word is both a flashlight and a floodlight? Psalm 119:105 says “Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” (NASB) His word is the flashlight for our next step. He gives the wisdom and discernment we need to stay on the right path. Are you facing a major decision? Unsure which way to go? Let God speak to you through His word. James 1:5 tells us if we lack wisdom, we can ask God. He gives generously.

God’s word is also a floodlight, illumining the purpose He has for our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 says “‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” (NASB) We don’t need to fear what lies ahead because His love and faithfulness never fail. His plans for us are always for our good. Psalm 139:16 tells us God fashioned our days to fit us before we were even born. He put us on this earth for a reason.

When I go outside at night, my flashlight and floodlight are great–as long as I turn them on. Otherwise, I’m in the dark. To walk in God’s light, we need to open His word. The Bible is His love letter to us. He will guide our steps and give light for our path as we spend time with Him. May we never miss a day coming into His presence!

Now it’s your turn! What verse has God used to give light to your path? Please leave your comment in the box below.

Although this verse doesn’t specificly mention light, I like Isaiah 30:21 as a guide for our path, “Whether you turn to the left or right, your ear will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘this is the way, walk in it’.” Loved your message, Kim. I, too, live in the country with lots of wildlife–I’m thankful for the moonlight and flashlights when the moon isn’t available.
